Tracker lets you connect your product discovery process directly to customer insights

Overview

Tracker matches ideas or issues from your product management tool (like Jira Product Discovery) with feedback from your customer interactions, so you can see how well each idea is supported by real-world evidence. This feature helps your team make faster, more informed product decisions.

Currently Tracker only supports Jira Product Discovery, but we plan to add more idea management systems based on customer demand.

Who this is for

Tracker is useful for Product Managers, Product Owners, Product Teams, and anyone involved in managing feature ideas and validation. It's available for teams using Jira Product Discovery with a Tracker licence.

What you can do with Tracker

  • See which of your ideas have strong customer evidence based on recent feedback.

  • Quickly jump from an idea in Jira to a complete analysis in Four/Four.

  • View quality ratings for your ideas, highlighting which have the clearest descriptions.

  • Automatically surface undiscovered topics not yet tracked as formal ideas.

  • Push relevant statistics (such as number of accounts, leads, opportunities, and insights) into Jira fields for each idea.

  • Get near real-time updates as ideas change over time.

Before you start

To use Tracker, you will need:

  • A Tracker product licence.

  • To connect Four/Four to your Jira instance.

  • At least one Jira Product Discovery space.

  • Ideas created in Product Discovery.

  • To create custom fields in your Jira project for Four/Four to push stats (optional).

If you use an initiative/idea hierarchy in JPD, Tracker will roll up stats according to your grouping structure.

How it works

You add or update an idea in Jira Product Discovery. Four/Four regularly fetches these ideas and:

  • Rates each idea for quality (based on how specific and well-described it is).

  • Creates an Four/Four summary of your idea it uses for insight matching.

  • Matches customer insights from the last 12 months to each idea - ideas become "topics" in Four/Four. This matching can be configured to your preference.

  • Creates a complete analysis of your idea based on real customer conversations, including commercial information, customer sentiment and supporting Analyst research.

  • Aggregates commercial stats such as number of accounts, opportunities per idea, commercial value and pushes these back into your Jira idea (optional).

  • Updates everything automatically if an idea changes and as new insights are created.

  • Finds "emerging" topics with strong insight clusters, even if you haven’t created a tracking idea for them.

Key terms:

  • Idea: A feature request or product problem, tracked in your Jira space.

  • Insight: A snippet of customer feedback or conversation analyzed by Four/Four.

  • Initiative: A higher-level grouping in Jira containing multiple ideas (if used in your workflow).

  • Topic: How Four/Four aggregates insights that match an idea.

Set up Tracker

To get started with Tracker, simply connect Jira using the one-click process in the Four/Four connection settings.

That's all! Four/Four will automatically discover your JPD projects and start tracking Ideas for you.

But if you want to configure which ideas and insights Four/Four uses, read on.

  1. Go to the Jira settings interface.

  2. Review your Jira Product Discovery spaces and select which ideas Tracker should analyze based on quality level, idea status and category. You can also configure which insights Four/Four considers when generating its analysis.

  3. If you want stats pushed into JIRA, create the required custom fields.

  4. Four/Four will start processing and matching ideas to insights automatically.

  5. To see live links to insights from JIRA, click the Four/Four link inside your JIRA issue.

To see stats directly in your Jira ideas, create the following fields for the Idea issue type:

The fields should be created with the exact name provided, and the field should have the same type as specified. The stats are refreshed in Jira at midnight, so when they are created you should expect to see the numbers the following day.

Common use cases

Use case: Prioritize ideas by customer demand
How: View the number of accounts, leads, and total insights attached to each idea.

Use case: Refine or split vague ideas
How: Edit your idea and create another. Tracker will re-analyze, split insights if needed, and revise stats.

Use case: Find which customers have mentioned a specific request
How: Jump from the idea into Four/Four, and see a list of contacts and companies linked to supporting insights.

Use case: Discover untracked customer needs
How: Use the "emerging ideas" tab to see suggested topics without matching Ideas.

Use case: Export all supporting evidence for a workshop
How: Export the matched insights and contact info from the Tracker view into Excel.

FAQs

How does Tracker decide which ideas to match?
By default it uses high and medium quality ideas that are active (not closed). You can change which statuses or groups it considers.

How is "quality" of an idea determined?
Four/Four analyses how specific and well-documented the idea's description is. More detail and clarity = higher quality.

Can I edit ideas after they’re imported?
Yes. Edits are picked up by Four/Four and stats/insights are refreshed automatically.

What if my idea covers multiple topics?
Tracker generates its own focused summary and tries to separate out distinct topics. If you split your idea, Four/Four will redistribute insights.

How do I get Four/Four stats to show in Ideas?
Create the custom fields as above. Once they’re set up, Four/Four will fill them in and keep them updated every 24 hours, or whenever the model is regenerated.

What stats can Tracker push?
Currently: number of attached insights, accounts, leads, and opportunities. Is there something else Four/Four knows you'd like to see in Jira? Get in touch!

Will Tracker change my ideas?
No, Tracker only edits the custom fields you create for Four/Four stats. No other data is changed.

Can Tracker help me find people to contact for research into my idea?
Yes! You can export matched insights with customer details or filter in Four/Four to find relevant contacts.

How often does Tracker update data?
Since a product team can make several changes to the ideas during an idea refinement session, Four/Four waits for the idea database to become "stable" and waits until there have been 15 minutes with no changes before regenerating the model and updating stats. Even if no idea changes are made, Four/Four will update the stats on the Idea in Jira every 24 hours.

Does Tracker work with JPD Premium heirarchies?
Yes. If you use a custom issue type to group ideas, Tracker will roll up stats and insight counts to show high-level totals on those grouping ideas.
